Appropriate
Hosted by Spokane Civic Theatre
Appropriate is Branden Jacobs-Jenkins's Southern gothic family drama, set at a crumbling Arkansas plantation house where three estranged siblings gather to settle their late father's estate. What starts as bickering over furniture and debts turns into something much darker when they find something in his belongings that forces a reckoning with what the family has inherited. It's sharp, funny in uncomfortable ways, and builds to a genuinely unsettling place — the kind of play people argue about on the drive home. Spokane Civic Theatre has been staging community-driven work for decades, with local actors, locally built sets and costumes, and an audience that tends to know the people onstage. It's an intimate indoor house where a play this tightly wound lands hard.
